AIT POLLUTION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC IN 2000

Czech Hydrometeorological Institute - Air Quality Protection Division

2.2.4 Moravian-Silesian Region

Sulphur Dioxide

Pollution levels in the Moravian-Silesian Region caused by sulphur dioxide in 2000 are illustrated in charts of the fields of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of daily SO2 concentrations with presentation of measured values at stations (Figs. 2-29, 2-30).

In comparison with other affected areas, the Ostrava Region (now part of the Moravian-Silesian Region) has in recent years experienced relatively low levels of pollution caused by sulphur dioxide. Significant decrease of this type of pollution was confirmed also in 2000. Almost on the whole territory of the Moravian-Silesian Region the maximum SO2 concentrations reached 15 μg.m-3 (annual arithmetic mean), i.e. one quarter of the limit value.

Suspended Particulate Matter

Pollution levels in the Moravian-Silesian Region caused by SPM in 2000 are illustrated in charts of annual arithmetic means, 95th percentiles of SPM concentrations and 90th percentiles of PM10 fraction (Figs. 2-31, 2-32, 2-33).

The Moravian-Silesian Region, particularly its Ostrava-City and Karviná Districts, has been and, in terms of the size of the area affected, continues to be the region which suffers from SPM most of all. This is attributable to the specific pattern of air pollution sources. Recently a downward trend of the levels measured has been reported also from this region. In 2000, similarly as in the previous year, none of the stations recorded the SPM limit value exceedence in 5 % cases. In case of PM10 the EU limit values were exceeded at AIM station in Bohumín. Relatively highest pollution caused by SPM, annual arithmetic mean above 40 μg.m-3, was recorded in the Ostrava-City and Karviná Districts, and in the north part of the Frýdek-Místek District. In 2000 certain increase in PM10 concentrations was recorded as compared to 1999 in the following Districts: Ostrava-City, Karviná, Opava and Frýdek-Místek at most AIM stations. This was caused also by deteriorated meteorological and dispersion conditions at the end of the year 2000 (see Chapter 2.4).

Nitrogen Oxides

Maps of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of nitrogen oxide concentrations using spot symbols are included for the individual measuring sites in the Moravian-Silesian Region in 2000 Figs. 2-34, 2-35).

In 2000 the limit values were slightly exceeded in more than 5 % cases at AIM stations Ostrava Poruba/Vth city district, Havířov and Public Health Service station Karviná-OHS. The pollution levels above 40 μg.m-3 (annual arithmetic mean) were recorded solely at AIM stations in Ostrava-Poruba/ Vth city district, Ostrava-Přívoz and Havířov. The remaining stations recorded concentrations below one half of the annual limit value. The majority of AIM stations recorded a slight increase in nitrogen oxides concentrations expressed by the level of the 95th percentile.

The graphic representation of annual courses of the above substances daily concentrations at selected stations in the Moravian-Silesian Region (Fig. 2-36) illustrates that the SPM and PM10 fraction contribution to air pollution is still decisive in this region. Urban stations reported also a significant contribution of nitrogen oxides.
