AIT POLLUTION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC IN 2000

Czech Hydrometeorological Institute - Air Quality Protection Division

2.2.3 Northwest Region

Sulphur Dioxide

Pollution in the Northwest Region (covering Karlovy Vary Region, Ústí nad Labem Region and Liberec Region) caused by sulphur dioxide in 2000 is illustrated in maps of the fields of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of SO2 daily concentrations with presentation of measured values at stations (Figs. 2-20, 2-21).

In the past the Northwest Region, particularly the Most Basin, was affected by sulphur dioxide most of all. In recent years a downward trend has been observed also in this region. This was true also in 2000 when further significant SO2 pollution decrease was recorded, expressed especially by the levels of 24-h means. This is confirmed also by the fact that the current limit value (IHd) was not exceeded at any station in 2000. Only occasionally annual arithmetic mean values above 25 μg.m-3 were reported.

Suspended Particulate Matter

The SPM air pollution level in the Northwest Region in 2000 is presented in charts of annual arithmetic means, 95th percentiles of SPM daily concentrations and 90th percentiles of PM10 fraction daily concentrations (Figs. 2-22, 2-23, 2-24).

In the past the Northwest Region – above all the Most Basin – was, in terms of square area, the second most affected region after Ostrava Region in respect to SPM pollution. In recent years this type of pollution decreased in north Bohemia. In 2000 the SPM concentrations (annual arithmetic mean) did not reach the limit values and the daily limit value was not exceeded in more than 5 % cases. SPM concentrations above 40 μg.m-3 in annual arithmetic mean were measured at several urban stations in the following Districts: Litoměřice, Ústí n.L., Chomutov and Most. In 2000 the SPM air pollution levels throughout the Northwest Region recorded further slight decrease. Air pollution caused by PM10 slightly decreased in rural areas.

Nitrogen Oxides

Maps of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of nitrogen oxide daily concentrations depict the individual measuring sites in 2000 using the method of spot symbols (Figs. 2-25, 2-26).

The highest pollution was recorded again at Public Health Service station in Děčín-OHS at which the exceedence of the current limit values was quite prominent. In spite of this a certain decline in absolute values of NOx concentrations was recorded at this station. This stations site is exposed to direct traffic influence. The daily air pollution limit was exceeded in more than 5 % cases at several stations in the following Districts: Děčín, Teplice, Ústí nad Labem, Litoměřice and Cheb. Measuring sites in northwestern towns are frequently situated near roads, where the impact of transport is evident (this is true especially in case of Děčín-OHS station). Overall nitrogen oxide pollution in 1999 and 2000 was roughly similar, a slight decrease was recorded in absolute values of the concentrations measured.

The share of sulphur dioxide, which in the recent years dominated in this regions air pollution, was comparable with the other monitored substances. In 2000 the influence of nitrogen oxides concentrations is dominant at several urban traffic stations. This is borne out by Figs. 2-27 and 2-28, which depict annual courses of the principal pollutants daily concentrations at selected stations in the Northwest Region.
