2.2.2 Central Bohemian Region

Sulphur Dioxide

Pollution levels in the Central Bohemian Region, including Prague, caused by sulphur dioxide in 2000 are illustrated in charts of the fields of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of SO2 concentrations with presentation of measured values at stations (Figs. 2-12 and 2-13).

Typical of Central Bohemia as well as of the Capital City of Prague, is the minimum level of sulphur dioxide pollution, far from reaching the limit values. Solely at the Kladno-Švermov AIM station, the concentrations exceeded (expressed by the annual arithmetic mean) the level of 20 μg.m-3. The value of the highest daily concentration in 2000 was exceeded at this AMS only (Tab. 2-28 and 2-30). At most measuring sites in this region a slight decrease of SO2 concentrations was recorded.

Suspended Particulate Matter

The state of SPM air pollution level in the Central Bohemian Region territory, inclusive the Capital City of Prague, in 2000 is presented in maps of annual arithmetic means and 95th SPM concentrations percentiles (Figs. 2-14, 2-15, 2-16).

In 2000, similarly as in 1999, the highest SPM pollution was registered at the Kladno-Švermov CHMI station monitoring PM10 fraction (Fig. 2-16). In 2000 the SPM limit values were not exceeded in more than 5 % cases at any station of Central Bohemian Region. The highest SPM concentrations slightly exceeded the annual limit value at AMS Mělník-Pšovka station. In 1999 and 2000 the levels of air pollution caused by SPM in Central Bohemian Region were approximately comparable.

Nitrogen Oxides

Spot symbol maps of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of nitrogen oxide concentrations (Fig. 2-17 and 2-18) have been drawn for the individual measuring sites in the Central Bohemian Region, including Prague, in 2000.

The heaviest pollution was recorded by AMS CHMI Beroun station (Fig. 2-17), at which the current ambient air pollution limits were exceeded, similarly as in the previous years. Direct road transport influence can be assumed at this station resulting from its exposure to direct effects of the traffic. On other measuring sites in the Central Bohemian Region, neither of all annual arithmetic mean-measured values exceeded the air pollution limit value. The daily limit value was exceeded in more than 5 % cases at AMS Kralupy. In 1999 and 2000 the levels of NOx air pollution were approximately the same in Central Bohemian Region, certain increase in NOx concentrations was recorded in annual arithmetic mean at AMS Beroun and a slight increase was recorded at several stations in absolute values of the concentrations measured.


SPM and nitrogen oxide-related air pollution predominates in the Central Bohemian Region. Overall, it is not feasible to pinpoint the substance most responsible for total air pollution. This is also evident from the graph of annual courses of daily concentrations at selected stations in this region (Fig. 2-19). NOx concentrations prevail at stations classified as traffic (T/U/, see the Explanatory notes to the tables of annual courses); at these stations a significant proportion of PM10 or SPM concentrations was reported as well. At stations, which are not directly influenced by traffic, SPM and PM10 concentrations prevail.
