Borne 14 Feb 1958 in Prague. High school (Gymnázium Praha-4, Budějovická 680) finished in 1977; from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University (MFF UK) graduated in meteorology and climatology in 1983. Degree RNDr. achieved in 1985, degree CSc. in 1994 (both at the Department of Meteorology and Environment Protection of the MFF UK).  Since 1983 has been employed in the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI).

In CHMI his main tasks are processing and interpretation of weather satellite data; presently he is the head of the Satellite Department of CHMI. His main professional interest is exploitation of satellite data for studies of cloud tops of deep convective storms (see the attached publications list). This was also the main topic of a project Relation between the AVHRR channel 3 cloud top reflectivity and severity of storms of the U.S./Czech Science and Technology Program (project #94067), carried out in collaboration with the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL/NOAA) in Norman, Oklahoma, USA (1994–1997). Also his CSc. thesis targeted the utilization of satellite data for storm tops research.

Besides the weather satellites, his other professional interests are aimed at convective storms in general. Between 2000–2002 he acted as principle co-investigator (for CHMI) of a project GAČR #205/00/1451 Severe convective phenomena in the territory of the Czech Republic (principle investigator: Daniela Řezáčová, ÚFA AV ČR), in 2004-2006 of a follow-up project GAČR #205/04/0114 Identification and prediction of supercell and mesoscale convective systems within the Czech Republic (principle investigator: Zbyněk Sokol, ÚFA), presently (2007-2011) of a GAČR project #205/07/0905 Exploitation of remote sensing means for modeling and monitoring of convective storms (principle investigator Zbyněk Sokol, ÚFA).

Since 1992/93 he is giving classes at the Department of Meteorology and Environment of MFF UK on Satellite and radar observations of meteorological phenomena. Besides that, he has been acting as supervisor to PhD. students, and as supervisor or consultant to Bachelor or Master of Science students for their thesis. He is a member of the Czech Meteorological Society.

Presently he is the member of the following bodies:

  • since 1995 - member of the Examination board K 10 (branch F8 – Meteorology and climatology) for PhD. dissertations at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University;

  • since 2000 - member of  the Board for the state final exams - Magister’s study program: Physics; branch: meteorology and climatology; Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University;

  • since 2000 - member of the Board for postdoc studies; branch F8 – Meteorology and climatology, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University;

  • since 2008 - member of the Board for postdoc studies; branch PHYSICS, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University.

In 2002 he was the principal organizer of the European Conference on Severe Storms 2002 (26-30 August 2002, Průhonice, Czech Republic) and main Czech co‑organizer of the CHMI-EUMETSAT Workshop on Severe Storms (21-23 August 2002, Průhonice, Czech Republic). In 2004 he was the main local co‑organizer of The 2004 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference (Prague, 31 May – 4 June 2004, Czech Republic). Besides the standard participation at various international and domestic conferences and workshops, he has participated as invited speaker at several international workshops, organized by EUMETSAT (2001 – Bratislava and Krakow, 2003 – Kiev, 2004 – Vilnius and León, 2005 – Cairo and Mikulov, 2006 - Sofia, 2007 - Athens, Trieste and Budapest).
